Come and learn how to play roller derby with Newcastle Roller Girls!
This is our beginner’s course for anyone who fancies a go at playing roller derby. You don’t need any experience at all, not even in roller skating – as long as you can stand up on skates, we’ll teach you the rest!
Feel free to bring your own quad skates if you have them (no roller blades please). If you don’t have any, don’t worry. We have skates you can hire, as well as protective pads and helmets.
The course lasts 15 weeks, and takes place on Sundays from 9:30am-12 noon at the Walker Activity Dome in Newcastle. The cost is £6 per session, or you can block-book 5 sessions for £25. Kit hire is £1.50 (for as much kit as you need to use).

A few important things to know:
Age: You must be 18 or over. If you look particularly youthful (lucky you!) please bring photo ID with you. We’re really strict on this policy as our insurance does not cover under 18s. There’s no upper age limit. We have skaters in their 50s and beyond! (If you’re under 18, look up Newcastle Junior Roller Derby. It’s for all gender skaters aged 8-17.)
Gender: Newcastle Roller Girls is part of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). In line with the WFTDA gender policy, we welcome people who identify as cisgender women, transgender women, intersex women, and gender expansive participants. People who identify as men are welcome to get in touch with Tyne and Fear, Newcastle’s men’s roller derby league.
Attendance: The start of the course is really important, and if you can’t make the first session, you can start in the second week. If you miss both of these sessions you will have to wait until the next intake.
